Production of Tropical Crops

Agricultural production can be mindful of the environment

EARTH University cultivates a diverse combination of tropical crops with the intention of exploring and learning about agriculture in the humid tropics.

EARTH’s internship program will give you the opportunity to learn:

  • About specific stages of agricultural production and available technologies
  • The correct way to use agricultural inputs while respecting the environment
  • The best practices for harvesting tropical crops by working in the field under the supervision of faculty and field workers specialized in their cultivation

The Tropical Crops Farm has 83 hectares (205 acres), with annual and perennial crops. The perennial crops, among others, include:

Cacoa Palm
Passion fruit Rambutan
Heart of palm Citrus

There are more than fifteen different annual crops, some of which are:

Cassava Sweet potato
Malanga Corn
Cucumber

The tropical crops farm maintains projects such as:

  • Organic cacao plantations
  • Hydroponic greenhouses
  • Collection of banana specimens
  • Integrated pest management

Specific activities for these internships can be planned in advance depending upon the expectations of the candidate and current demands on the farm. The supervisor will lead activities that combine discussion, readings, and reflection on the interns field work.

“It was really valuable to be directly involved in agriculture in a different part of the world. It gave me a new perspective of what else is going on in my field of study.”
